Leroy affectionately called (June) Hickman peacefully took his wings and transitioned to eternal rest, after a short period of illness, at the Home Serenity Rehabilitation Facility located in Washington, DC on May 27, 2021.
Leroy was born in Gibson, North Carolina on January 6, 1940 to the late Rebecca and Leroy Hickman Sr.
Leroy relocated to Bishopville, South Carolina where he grew up. He attended public school at Dennis Middle School in Bishopville, South Carolina.
Leroy met the love of his life, Earnestine Boykin, as a young teenager. They were inseparable and had a very fun-loving relationship.
After Earnestine graduated from high school; Leroy asked for her hand in marriage. Earnestine was not old enough to sign the marriage license. Her father, Johnny Boykin, had to give consent for the marriage and sign the documents to give permission for them to get married.
From Leroy and Earnestine’s union they had three children: Clayton Hickman, Lolita Hickman, and Gary Hickman.
Leroy and Earnestine transitioned to Washington, DC in 1961. Leroy was employed as a construction worker. He was a dedicated employee and retired as a pipeline worker.
Even though Earnestine and Leroy had separated; they remained close friends. They enjoyed going to Thrift Stores and Flee Markets on Saturdays. They would often go shop for their favorite foods.
Leroy loved and adored his children, grandchildren, and family. They had a good relationship. When his son, Clayton, was sick he was always there to help take care. He would take clothes, snacks and tended to his personal needs. He also helped with Clayton’s financial affairs.
Leroy hobbies included playing the lottery and cooking. He was a very good cook. He loved to cook Soul food which included: pig feet, pig tails, collard greens with ham hocks, hog maws and fried chicken. He enjoyed cooking big Sunday dinners and Clayton would always visit to get dinner.
Leroy loved his cars and always kept them clean and shining. He also loved music, to dress very nice, and look good. He had an affectionate smile that would light up the room.
Leroy will be sorely missed by his loving daughter Lolita (Sherman) Foster; sister Clara Canty of Patterson, N.J.; grandsons little Clayton Smith, Dwayne (Candace) Jones, Desean Foster; great grandsons Dwayne Allen Jones III and David Allen Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Leroy will be welcomed with open arms by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his mother Rebecca Hickman, Father Leroy Hickman, Sr., his wife Earnestine Hickman; his two sons Clayton and Gary Hickman; and sisters Lucille Holloman and Mary Hickman.
